SEW THE DOGSTAR WAIT IS OVER – THE TAILOR RETURNS

FORGIVE the headline’s cheesy pun from my analogue tabloid days…

Seriously, I couldn’t be more excited to catch up with Matthew Zajac’s play The Tailor Of Inverness at Eden Court on Wednesday, Nov 11 (now sold out) and Thursday, Nov 12  (limited tickets, it says on the theatre website) and to find out how recent years have changed the world and how we see this play, not least the war in Ukraine. But also how we look back on the Second World War and how it changed so many lives. And how our contemporary world has become so different from that post-war era. It seems appropriate thinking about this as Remembrance Day looms and takes us back – and maybe forward too. Highland theatre legends DOGSTAR THEATRE COMPANY started this tour of the play in Ullapool’s Macphail Centre on September 5. Just before that, I was lucky enough to speak to Matthew for an interview on the eve of the tour (it’s here on the site) and the republication of his post-play book based on his father’s story, from Luath Press, now out with a new introduction from Matthew.  Will time have changed our audience perception of  Matthew’s story of his late father’s past. And how has the play and its impact across the world affected the playwright and actor’s own life?

And good to see SPARK – Dogstar’s collaboration with Eden Court and the Playwrights’ Studio – return from January 21-24, the second edition of the Highland New Play Festival. So vibrant last time, with guests from the theatre community too, it reprises with Scratch Sessions performing and showcasing new play extracts, as well as Ceilidh Sessions, Workshops, Script Sessions and Speakout Sessions.

My review of the 15 band/ musician IMOUT WEEKENDER at An Seomar conceived by promoter IAIN McLAUGHLIN towards the end of last month, is up too.

And it’s here! The long-awaited album by Inverness singer-songwriter KATIE GREGSON-MACLEOD.

A few months ago, I wrote that we were very much moving – if you can very much move – into the Season Of The Book. It’s still going strong. Since then, the reviving HighlandLIT group of writers and book-lovers has hosted former Charleston pupil CAL FLYN  talking about her latest book The Savage Landscape, which took her across the world to find and try to understand wilderness. It was a great night. And on Thursday (November 12), the Gaelic and English poet AONGHAS PHADRAIG CAIMBEUL will be the guest for this month, with both his recent fiction and poetry collection Grian is Frasan: Sunshine and Showers  in focus with questions from HighandLIT’s John Dempster – at Roots Cafe, Inverness, from 7pm. And when the days are cold and wintry and the nights are dark and wet, it means one thing – time for the return of the  INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL at Eden Court. The 24th one arrives with perfect timing on Friday (November 13) for seven packed days – and get yourself a wee paper brochure for it. They’re back! Read programmer Paul MacDonald Taylor’s intro for the full story and the little booklet makes tantalising reading for the new must-see movies and world cinema gems to transport you far, far beyond the boundaries of Sneck!
